FEATURED ARTS GROUPS

HUMAN RACE’S MAN OF LA MANCHA HAS LOFT-Y GOALS

The Loft Theatre didn’t just create a dungeon for The Human Race Theatre’s production of Man of La Mancha, it has become a dungeon. David Centers’ design envelopes the theatre, to the point part of a wall has been knocked out to make room for a staircase.  But don’t worry – the audience still gets comfy chairs and doesn’t have to subsist on gruel.

Director Scott Stoney promises that despite the surroundings, there’s no audience participation. However, “We want them to feel part of the group as Cervantes tells his story to the prisoners.”

The Human Race is pulling out all the stops, as well as the wall, for the presentation of the famed musical based on the even more famous Cervantes novel. The cast of 18 is the largest in a decade in The Loft, and is headed by Human Race Executive Director Kevin Moore, in only his second appearance in the last dozen years (Big River was the other). Moore plays the imprisoned Cervantes, who then turns himself into Don Quixote, as he pursues The Impossible Dream.

The rest of the cast is a mixture of guest artists, including Melissa D’Amico, a local native who works out of New York, who will play Aldonza/Dulcinea; David Maxwell as Sancho Panza; Kristoffer Lowe as The Padre and David Tillestrand as The Innkeeper.

Local favorites in the group include Jamie Cordes, Renee Franck-Reed, Jake Lockwood, J.J. Tiemeyer, Aaron Vega, Mike Kennedy and Jerome Doerger.

The stunning music of La Mancha will be directed by Scot Woolley. He and the other musicians are hidden backstage, watching the show via video.

Man of La Mancha is now showing, with regular performances through November 15. Tickets are available via www.humanracetheatre.org or by calling Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or toll-free at (888) 228-3630.  Discounts are available for groups of ten or more by calling The Human Race at (937) 461-3823.

TRI-ART PRESENTS MEMBERS’ FALL ART SHOW

TRI-ART members will be submitting their artwork to be judged and displayed at this month’s Fall Art Show.  The show will be held at the High Street Gallery and open to the public November 8, 14 and 15 from 1 – 4 p.m.  Admission is free.

Original artwork from TRI-ART members will be judged in the following categories: oil & acrylics; mixed media, collage & miscellaneous; transparent watercolor; drawing & pastel; and miniatures 11 ½ X 7 ½ inches or less not including the matting and framing. Works of art will be for sale and may be purchased by visiting the gallery.

Kelly Joslyn, a Sinclair Community College associate professor and Chair of the Sinclair Art Department, will be the show’s judge.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) in Humanities, a Master of Humanities Degree (M. Hum) in Art History/Philosophy from Wright State University and is currently working to complete a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) at the University of Dayton in the Educational Leadership-Higher Education Administration program.  Her artwork has been exhibited at many local galleries including the Dayton Visual Arts Center and the Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery.

The TRI-ART Club is comprised of women members from the greater Dayton area.  Members may be artists or persons who have an active interest in art. Founded in 1953, the organization’s goal is to foster women artists in the Dayton area.  The TRI-ART Club meets six times a year at the Patterson Homestead. Anyone interested in joining may call Ginny Tuxhorn 937-429-0442.

DVAC’S ANNUAL HOLIDAY SALE BRINGS GREAT SHOPPING BACK DOWNTOWN

The Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) will open its annual ARTtoBUY Holiday Gift Gallery in plenty of time to get a leg up on the gift-giving season. Whether you are looking for something shiny, funky, elegant, practical or jolly, you will find what you are looking for – and many items you never imagined – at DVAC.

The annual exhibition and sale of artist-made gifts begins at 5 p.m. on November 6, when the gallery will be open until 8 p.m. during First Friday. The shop will remain open through 8 p.m. on January 1, 2010.

Half the DVAC gallery will be filled with original art and fine craft, created by more than 75 artists, bringing together thousands of handmade items. Paintings and prints; clothing and accessories; ceramics and wood vessels; ornaments and cards will be available in a wide variety of styles at affordable prices. There will be a large selection of jewelry available, from Jen Eastridge’s earthy copper-and-sterling earrings to Guustie Alvarado’s sophisticated glass necklaces.

Art for the home is available, too. Former Daytonian John Britt is back with his unique ceramic vessels, and ever-popular glassblower extraordinaire, Thomas Chapman, will show his dramatic glass uplifts. Caroline Kelley’s fuzzy fiber vases will make you look twice.

The gallery features plenty of seasonal pieces, including greeting cards by Linda Phillips and polymer pendants by Chris Bohmer-Stewart. Glass ornaments by Susan Cannon, knitted goods by Celise McKee and felted snowmen by Sarah Miller are just a few of the sweet items that will light up the holidays.

Don’t miss this chance to buy exquisite, one-of-a-kind pieces of art for your family and friends!  The gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11a.m. – 6 p.m. and is located at 118 North Jefferson Street in downtown Dayton.  For more information on DVAC and the ARTtoBUY Holiday Gift Gallery, visit www.daytonvisualarts.org or call (937) 224-3822.
